What It’s Like To Co-Author

What is it like to co-author something? I’ve done it a few times but only with two people. One was my brother from another mother, Todd Evans (Hey now Texas Bro!!). We’ve co-authored Fallen and Immortal Chronicles. I’m also in the process of co-authoring the rest of Bone Jar with Larisa (my blood oath sister, from cradle to grave boo!!). Both my co-authors are very different people. So different in fact that it poses a different set of, I wouldn’t say difficulties really but ways of mixing writing styles together.

Mixing styles can be a bit of a pain in the butt when co-authoring. Especially if your styles are quite different. For example: Todd and I come from different beliefs systems, that colors our writing whether we like it or not. He’s more conservative, I’m more… well out there with certain concepts (Sex sells? Sexy self awareness sells more?). That means I have to tone myself down a little more than I would normally to accommodate my writing partner and his beliefs when working with Todd.

Working with Larisa, well we both have the same comfort levels and are both pretty out there with certain concepts and it poses no problem between us. We still respect each other though of course as well as the process. She processes real time with a co-worker while Todd was more than happy to collaborate by emailing and chatting rather than together in the same document (meaning we pieced it all together after writing our sections).
